Product Description

Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam Roll for Acoustic and Vibration Control

Topsun open cell NBR/PVC foam roll is a flexible nitrile rubber and PVC foam material designed for acoustic absorption, cushioning, vibration damping, gap filling and custom converted foam components. Continuous roll formats are suitable for automotive, HVAC, equipment, construction and other industrial applications requiring large-area foam processing.

Open-cell foam contains an interconnected cellular structure that allows the material to compress easily and interact with airborne sound. This makes it useful for selected acoustic and NVH applications where sound absorption, cushioning and vibration control are more important than moisture sealing.

Current Topsun product information lists tensile strength from 160–450 kPa, elongation from 180–250%, standard sheet sizes of 1000×2000 mm and 1500×2000 mm, and thicknesses from 1–50 mm. The broader NBR/PVC foam range includes roll widths from 1000–1800 mm and typical roll lengths of approximately 10 m.

Why Use Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam?

  • Sound absorption: open-cell structure allows acoustic energy to enter the foam structure, making it suitable for selected sound-control applications.

  • Vibration damping: flexible foam can reduce direct contact and help attenuate vibration between suitable components.

  • Cushioning: compressible foam is useful for pads, spacers and protective interfaces.

  • Soft compression: suitable for assemblies where high closing force is undesirable.

  • Gap conformability: flexible foam can adapt to irregular surfaces and variable gaps.

  • Continuous roll format: suitable for slitting, laminating, cutting and continuous converting processes.

  • Custom fabrication: suitable foam grades can be converted into sheets, strips, pads, tapes and die-cut parts.

  • Adhesive backing: one-side or double-side adhesive can be applied for suitable assembly requirements.

Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam for Acoustic Applications

Open-cell foam is commonly selected for acoustic applications because interconnected cells allow sound waves to enter the material instead of being reflected primarily from the surface.

Within the foam structure, part of the acoustic energy can be dissipated through interaction with the internal cell network. Material thickness, density, cell structure, installation space and the frequency range of the noise all influence the final acoustic performance.

For projects where acoustic absorption is the primary requirement, provide the installation location, available thickness, noise source and relevant acoustic targets so the foam construction can be evaluated.

Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam for Automotive NVH

Automotive interiors contain multiple potential sources of noise and vibration, including trim panels, dashboards, doors, headliners, equipment housings and other contacting components.

Flexible open-cell NBR/PVC foam can be considered for selected automotive NVH components where sound absorption, cushioning, vibration isolation or anti-rattle performance is required.

Foam strips, pads and custom die-cut parts can be produced according to installation geometry. Required density and thickness depend on the available space, compression and acoustic requirements.

Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam for HVAC Acoustic Control

HVAC systems can generate airborne and structure-borne noise from fans, ducts, equipment housings and mechanical vibration. Open-cell foam can be used in selected acoustic and vibration-control applications where the material is protected and compatible with the system design.

Unlike closed-cell insulation foam, open-cell material should not automatically be selected as the primary vapor-control or condensation barrier. The required cell structure should therefore be matched to the actual HVAC function.

For HVAC projects, specify whether the foam is required primarily for acoustic absorption, vibration isolation, cushioning or thermal insulation before material selection.

Open Cell Foam for Cushioning and Gap Filling

The compressibility of open-cell foam allows it to conform to variable spaces and irregular contact surfaces. This can make it useful for gap filling, panel cushioning, equipment interfaces and anti-rattle applications.

Foam thickness should be selected according to the minimum and maximum gap and the intended compression in the finished assembly. Excessive compression can change cushioning and acoustic behavior.

Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam Roll vs. Closed Cell NBR/PVC Foam

Comparison Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam Closed Cell NBR/PVC Foam
Cell Structure Interconnected cellular structure Predominantly isolated cells
Compression Generally softer and easier to compress depending on grade Generally firmer depending on density and grade
Acoustic Absorption More suitable for selected sound-absorption applications More commonly used for insulation, sealing and vibration isolation
Moisture Barrier Function Not normally selected as the primary vapor barrier More suitable where resistance to moisture penetration is required
Typical Applications Acoustic absorption, NVH, cushioning, gap filling and soft interfaces HVAC insulation, pipe insulation, sealing and environmental gasketing

Typical Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam Roll Applications

Application Typical Function
Automotive NVH Sound absorption, cushioning, anti-rattle and vibration-control components.
Automotive Interior Panels Soft foam interfaces around selected trim and interior assemblies.
HVAC Acoustic Applications Selected sound-absorption and vibration-control applications.
Equipment Housings Acoustic absorption, cushioning and vibration isolation.
Construction Components Flexible cushioning, acoustic control and suitable gap-filling applications.
Electronics and Appliances Soft cushioning pads, acoustic components and vibration-control interfaces.
Custom Foam Parts Strips, pads, tapes and die-cut shapes manufactured according to drawings.

Why Choose NBR/PVC Foam in Roll Form?

Roll material is useful for manufacturers and foam converters that require continuous lengths for slitting, adhesive lamination, cutting or large-area applications.

Compared with individual sheets, longer rolls can reduce the number of joints during continuous fabrication and simplify feeding through suitable converting equipment.

Topsun's broader NBR/PVC range lists widths from 1000–1800 mm and typical roll lengths of approximately 10 m. Confirm available dimensions for the selected open-cell grade before ordering.

Custom Open Cell NBR/PVC Foam Converting

Continuous foam rolls can be converted into application-specific components according to customer drawings and assembly requirements.

Converted Form Typical Use
Foam Roll Continuous converting and large-area applications.
Foam Sheet Fabrication and component production.
Foam Strip Gap filling, anti-rattle and cushioning.
Foam Pad Acoustic absorption, spacing and vibration isolation.
Adhesive-Backed Foam Easier positioning during assembly.
Die-Cut Component Custom acoustic, cushioning and NVH parts according to drawings.
